Range guide

How far can a fat-tire e-bike go with a cargo trailer?

Short answer: less than the box says. Advertised range is measured with a light rider on flat pavement. Add a trailer full of rods, a cooler, and tackle, and the numbers change. Here's how to plan for it.

A realistic rule of thumb

Plan on a quarter to a half less than the advertised range when towing a loaded trailer. These are estimates — your real range depends on load, terrain, weather, and how you ride. Test it on a short trip near home first.

What eats your battery

Weight is the biggest factor, followed by hills and soft ground like sand and mud. Headwinds, cold weather, under-inflated tires, and running throttle-only all cut range further.

Plan the round trip, not the ride in

Use no more than half your battery getting to the water. The ride home is when you're tired, the cooler might be heavier, and the light is fading.

Pick the right trailer for the load

Lighter loads ride well in our 2-in-1 Pushcart trailer ($299). For bigger hauls, the Heavy-Duty Foldable Trailer ($489) is rated for 275 lb. Stay within the listed capacity.

Tips to stretch your range

Use a low pedal-assist level, keep tires at the right pressure, pack only what you need, keep heavy gear low and centered, and bring a spare battery on long trips.

Questions & answers

+How far can a fat-tire e-bike go with a cargo trailer?

As a rough rule, expect noticeably less than the bike's advertised range — often a quarter to a half less with a loaded trailer, hills, or soft ground. A bike rated for 40 miles might realistically cover 20–30 miles towing gear.

+What drains an e-bike battery fastest when towing?

Heavy loads, steep climbs, sand or mud, headwind, cold weather, and riding on throttle only instead of pedal assist.

+How can I get more range while towing a trailer?

Use pedal assist on a low level, keep tires properly inflated, pack only what you need, keep heavy items low and centered, and carry a spare battery for long trips.
